![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was incredibly pumped to see what my little sister would think about this read, since it's the perfect visual example of what I felt like during those years before her birth. Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado. I initially picked it up for my little sister, but ended up enjoying it myself in one sitting just before she came home from school. Also, shoutout to my local library for holding a copy of this graphic novel. My third read, Sisters, in particular resonated with me because of the main notion of sisterhood and its complications/ joys. Telgemeier's books just keep getting better and better in my eyes. ![]() ![]() In a world where every culture’s mythology is real, Medusa’s sisters want revenge on Poseidon, Troy is under siege again, and the Yakuza want their homunculi (mythological artificial humans) back. Homunculus and the Cat – Just a typical kitten saves the afterlife story, disguised as a book about death. In his new novel, Homunculus and the Cat, Nathan Croft takes the kitchen sink approach to fantasy. The list goes on and on, from Marvel’s Avenger lineup to any Discworld tale. ![]() Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden, Chicago’s first (and only) wizard P.I., faces down vampires, werewolves, gods, Valkyrie, fey, sidhe, and angels. Rowling’s Harry Potter gets his Hogwarts admission letter (I’m still waiting for mine) and suddenly his world includes witches, trolls, and a huge cast of magical beings. But actually, as I say about most tropes, in the right hands it’s a good thing. The fantasy kitchen sink approach has gotten a bad rep. If someone, somewhere thought up a god, mythological creature, or patently unscientific explanation, into the fantasy kitchen sink it goes. ![]() One criticism often leveled against fantasy world builders (aka writers) is that they take this too far. Other philosophers developed that as an existence proof for a god, cogito igitur esse potuit, (If I can think it, the universe can build it. In 1637, René Descartes postulated cogito ergo sum (I think, therefore I am) as the first step toward demonstrating that certain knowledge was attainable. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() graceful, funny, perceptive, and satisfying."- The Boston Globe Ali are worthy of our respect, and it is a great pleasure to spend time with them."- Los Angeles Times "There's more than a bit of Romeo and Juliet here. knows just what delicious disruption romance can introduce to a well-settled life."- The Washington Post With her crisp wit and gentle insight, Simonson. but Simonson nails the genteel British comedy of manners with elegant aplomb."- The Christian Science Monitor Major Pettigrew's Last Stand has them all."- The New York Times It's all about intelligence, heart, dignity and backbone. The background books are filled with terrible stories of the Beginning Fathers, tales most definitely put together from ratings of journals and files taped by the Owners themselves. Should examine! Graham Farmelo, a British Physicist, has obviously done in-depth research, and I understand he had access to many of Dirac’s personal papers. This is one of the best books in terms of detail and insight into the brilliant character of Paul Dirac 1902-1984. Paul Dirac won 1933 Nobel Prize in physics A compelling human story, The Strangest Man also depicts a spectacularly exciting era in scientific history. His tastes in the arts ranged from Beethoven to Cher, from Rembrandt to Mickey Mouse.īased on previously undiscovered archives, The Strangest Man reveals the many facets of Dirac's brilliantly original mind. Yet he was a family man and was intensely loyal to his friends. He was an extraordinarily reserved loner, relentlessly literal-minded, and appeared to have no empathy with most people. ![]() ![]() One of Einstein's most admired colleagues, Dirac was in 1933 the youngest theoretician ever to win the Nobel Prize in physics.
